**Disclaimer** This post is late… 4 months late to be exact. It is never to late to start doing something to make a positive impact in your life. That is why I am posting it now and I do not like to leave things unfinished.
This is not a post about New Year’s resolutions. In fact, I do not believe in them. Here is why, only 8% of people who make New Year’s resolutions stick to them. If they do stick to them it will last only a week and I would bet most people are out of the game by the end of January. However, I do like setting goals and January is an ideal time to reevaluate your life goals.
I set goals for myself that are realistic and unrealistic. I am not setting myself up to fail but setting an unrealistic goal helps me strive for something better. In that scenario, it is about the journey of getting to that point. I may never achieve that goal but I will learn something about myself in the process. With that said, use your own judgement when setting unrealistic goals. For example, I cannot lost 50 pounds in one week. That would be unrealistic and I would be setting myself up to fail.
I have broken down my goals into different categories to help with organization. Without further ado, here is my list.
Physical
- I will lose 50 pounds this year
- Get in better shape
- Eat better and cut out processed foods as much as possible
Intellectual
- Learn about permaculture and organic gardening
- Learn the ins and outs of starting a business
- Read more books
Adventure
- Climb some rocks
- Ride my bike
- Go on a backpacking trip
Financial
- Debt free minus the house
Creative
- Build stuff with wood
Spiritual
- Read the Bible everyday on my own and with the family
- Talk to God more

Hello there Andrew,
Really enjoyed your post about goal setting. Especially the importance of setting both realistic and unrealistic goals as you can learn by achieving and failing alike. As someone who struggles with setting goals at times, I like the thought of categorizing goals to stay organized. Hope all is well and keep up the great writing.
Andrew
Thanks Kris! Good luck with your goal setting!
